Web Tool for Traffic Engineers: Direct Manipulation and Visualisation of Vehicular Traffic Statistics Using Google Maps

This thesis presents a lightweight web application prototype for traffic volume statistics analysis and manipulation. The tool was created using a participatory design approach, in conjunction with the traffic center of Oulu. The purpose of this work is to provide experienced traffic engineers an integrated environment and a convenient way to interact and visualize traffic volume data. The target user group of the tool consists of experienced traffic engineers. The tool was built utilizing an existing network of traffic detection loops installed in the city of Oulu, common web technologies, open-source extension frameworks and public online map and chart tool application programming interfaces. Various methods for visualizing traffic volumes were considered during the project and an engineer-focused practical view was primarily our target when selecting appropriate features and ways to visualize traffic volume data. The tool was designed using an adaptive pattern design to allow modularity, extendability deployment in diverse settings.
